The quick answer

Vedic astrology is a system that uses the sidereal zodiac, which follows the actual positions of the stars, to build a birth chart from your date, time and place of birth. It reads nine planets (grahas), twelve houses (bhavas), 27 nakshatras and a timing system called dasha to describe personality and likely life periods.

What Is Vedic Astrology?

Jyotish means "science of light" in Sanskrit. It is one of the six Vedangas, the traditional branches of Vedic learning. Its main ideas are old and are recorded in classical works such as the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, the Jaimini Sutras and the Phaladeepika.

The basic idea is simple: the sky at the moment and place of your birth is a map. Each planet sits in a sign and a house, and each house stands for an area of life, such as career, marriage or money. How the planets sit and relate to each other shapes the reading.

Vedic and Western Astrology: The Main Differences

Vedic and Western Astrology: The Main Differences

Your signUsually one sign earlier than your Western sun signYour familiar sun sign

The two zodiacs differ by an angle called the ayanamsa, currently about 24 degrees. That is why, for most people, the Vedic sun sign is different from the Western one.

Vedic Astrology Birth Chart: What It Shows

Your birth chart, called a kundli or janam kundali, is a picture of the sky at your birth, drawn as twelve houses. It is built from your date, time and place of birth.

How to Read Your Chart in Four Steps

  1. Start with the lagna.

The rising sign sets the frame for the whole chart and decides which house each sign falls in.

  2. Look at the Moon.

The Moon sign and nakshatra show your mind and are the base for dasha timing.

  3. Check the houses and their lords.

Each house has a ruling planet. Where that planet sits and how strong it is tells you how that life area goes.

  4. Read the dasha.

The planetary period you are in now brings certain houses and planets to the front, which is how Vedic astrology approaches timing.

Vedic Astrology Calculator: Get Your Chart Now

Our calculator turns your birth details into a full Vedic chart and a plain-language reading.

  1. Enter your name, date of birth, time of birth and birthplace.

  2. Choose your language and chart style.

  3. Get your chart, planet positions, nakshatra and dasha timeline.

  4. Ask AstroVoice AI follow-up questions, such as "What does my 7th house say?" or "Which dasha am I in?"

The planet positions are calculated from astronomical data using the Lahiri ayanamsa, the standard used in India. If you do not know your birth time, enter your best estimate. The planets' signs and most dasha periods will still be useful, but the rising sign and houses may shift, so we mark those parts as less certain.

Planet positions are calculated in your browser with the Lahiri ayanamsa and whole-sign houses. The birthplace search uses a map service to find coordinates. Birth details are kept in a cookie on this device for a year so our other calculators can fill them in. Tap Clear to remove them.

Your personality

Your ascendant (lagna) is Libra, so people usually see you as fair, friendly and easy to talk to. Inside, your Moon in Taurus shows that you need calm, comfort and stability to feel happy. Your ascendant lord, Venus, sits in your 10th house, so you do your best when you have meaningful work and a clear goal.

Your strengths

Your natural strengths are confidence (Sun), a caring heart (Moon) and a sharp mind (Mercury). These come easily to you, so lean on them when life gets busy.

Your current period

Right now you are in your Jupiter period (mahadasha), which runs until Dec 2033. In simple words, this is a time of growth, wisdom and good guidance. In your chart, Jupiter is linked to effort and skills, plus daily work and health, so these areas reward your attention most now. Within it, the Venus sub-period (until Jun 2028) adds relationships, comfort and creativity. Use this time well and it can bring real progress.

What Astrology Can and Cannot Tell You

Vedic astrology is an interpretive tradition, not a science. The planet positions are exact, but what they mean is a matter of tradition and judgement, and no chart can promise an outcome or a date. Use it for reflection and guidance, not as a substitute for professional advice on health, money or law. We never ask you to pay for a ritual, gemstone or remedy to "fix" your chart.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Vedic astrology?

Vedic astrology, or Jyotish, is the traditional Indian system of astrology. It uses the sidereal zodiac, nine planets, twelve houses, 27 nakshatras and dasha periods to read a birth chart and understand personality and timing.

How is Vedic astrology different from Western astrology?

Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which follows the fixed stars, while Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which follows the seasons. The two differ by about 24 degrees, so many people have a different sun sign in each. Vedic astrology also puts more weight on the Moon sign, rising sign and dasha timing.

How do I get my Vedic astrology birth chart?

Enter your date, time and place of birth in the calculator on this page. It builds your chart with planet positions, houses, nakshatra and dasha, and you can then ask follow-up questions in the chat.

What is a lagna, and why does it matter?

The lagna, or rising sign, is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at your birth. It sets the first house and decides which sign falls in each house of your chart, so it shapes the whole reading.

What is a dasha?

A dasha is a planetary period. The most widely used system, Vimshottari dasha, divides life into periods ruled by nine planets, and each one brings certain houses and themes to the front.

What is a nakshatra?

The nakshatras are 27 divisions of the zodiac, each about 13 degrees and 20 minutes wide. Your birth nakshatra is the one the Moon was in, and it is used for dasha timing and kundli matching.

Do I need my exact birth time?

Exact time gives the best result, because it fixes the rising sign and houses. Without it, the planets' signs and most dasha periods are still useful, but house-based details are less certain.

Is Vedic astrology scientific?

No. It is an interpretive tradition built on exact astronomical positions, but its meanings are not scientifically proven. We present it as a tool for reflection, not as a guarantee about the future.

Is the calculator free?

The core chart is free. You do not need a credit card to see it. New users get 3 free Oracle questions and 3 free Astra questions.

Can I talk to a person about my chart?

Yes. After your report, you can book a consultation with one of our astrologers.

Is my birth data safe?

Yes. We use your birth details only to prepare your reading, and we do not share them with anyone. To ask for your data to be deleted, email sarathi@astrovoice.ai.
